The swastika was introduced in Japan through Buddhism, but has long been related to Hinduism. Its shape means `good fortune` and can often be found on maps, to depict temples and shrines.

Although throughout history the swastika has predominately been a symbol of divinity and spirituality among a variety of ancient cultures, the inverted hooked cross `hakenkreuz` appropriated by the Nazis, has tainted its meaning among Western cultures.
